Naviera
Austral keeps a regular service between Quellón
(Chiloé) and Puerto Chacabuco which
brings supplies to the small villages and hamlets in the islands,
like Melinka, and to isolated areas in the continent. Due
to cargo needs, there can be up to 8 stops on the way, and
the trip can last between 30 to 40 hours. There are 1 to 3
trips a week.
During
some time this trip was offered only to locals, but now it
is taking tourists along as well.
This
trip is made by Naviera Austral with its boats Alejandrina
and Don Baldo. Both of them carry general cargo, vehicles
and passengers. It is possible to buy seats ("butaca")
or buy a "general ticket" without seat. The ferry
Don Baldo also has cabins with berths for 4 people.
