Since May 2005, Argentina demands an insurance of civil liability for damages against others to all private and rented vehicles that enter the country. The lack of this document means that the vehicle in question won't be allowed to enter into Argentina. Since there is a large number of tourists that travel from Pucón to San Martín de los Andes and Bariloche, TravelAid has incorporated this service and can issue the International Obligatory Insurance.

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO EXTEND THE INSURANCE ONCE YOU ARE IN ARGENTINA.

To issue the insurance we need the car's document called "Certificado de Inscripción", which is given by the Registro Civil in Chile, and clearly shows the name of the owner of the vehicle. It normally is a small yellow paper (when the car isn't new), and a full length paper when the car has recently been sold. This document provides all the information we need to fill the form that we e-mail to the Insurance Office in Argentina.

TravelAid works with the insurance agent Patricio Alvarado Salinas in Santiago, and through his office we can issue the Obligatory Insurance which gives SMG (Swiss Medical Group) Compañía Argentina de Seguros plus the Travel Assistance Insurance provided by AIG Assist. The procedure is quite fast and easy. With the policy we will give you all the extra information you need to have in case of having an accident in Argentina. SMG is a well-known International Insurance Company, with branches in several cities in Argentina. We will also give you a brochure with full information of your benefits as user of the Travel Assistance, and what to do in case of an emergency.

Coverage:
The Obligatory Insurance is a policy of civil liability for damages caused against others not transported. It means that in case of an accident, the payment in case of death and/or personal damages is of US $40.000 per person, with a maximum of US $200.000 per event. In case of material damages, the payment will be US $20.000 to the affected, with a maximum of US$ 40.000 per event.

We must note that all vehicles in Argentina already have this insurance. The Obligatory Insurance Chileans must pay to get the permit to use the roads (Permiso de Circulación), does not correspond to the one Argentina has, and also has no coverage abroad.

Travel Assistance:

In order to provide a better service to our customers and also offer better coverage and benefits, since November 1st 2007 was incorporated a new insurance for Travel Assitance by AIG Assist. This insurance will be given authomatically and for free to the driver of the car, with a maximum of 10 days. Other people travelling along in the same car have the possibility to take this insurance too, paying US$ 1,50 per day and per person.

Documents to get out of the country:

All the vehicle´s paperwork must be in perfect order, since this will be thoroughly controlled at Customs. The most important document is the “Certificado de Inscripción en el Registro Nacional de Vehículos Motorizados" given by the Registro Civil in Chile, certificate that shows who is the actual owner of the car.

If you are not the owner, you must get a permit issued by a public notary in which the owner of the car mentioned in the "Certificado de Inscripción" allows you to take the vehicle out of the country. If you are driving a rented car, ask the rental about the whole procedure and check carefully all the papers, especially the numbers of your passport, the licence plates, etc. All numbers and names must be perfectly in order to avoid trouble at the border. Also be aware that if you intend to take a rented car abroad, the car rental may charge you extra. Some companies already have the obligatory insurance for their cars, but in other cases you will have to pay for it on your own.
